Criminal Record Check Search

FAQs

Q

What is a Countywide Felony and Misdemeanor search?

A

A Countywide Felony and Misdemeanor search is conducted directly through the selected county via on-site, hands-on research or remote access. This search will return felonies, misdemeanors, and alcohol-related traffic offenses.  On average, turnaround time varies from same day to 72 hours. The scope of search averages 10 years (minimum of 7 years).

The Countywide search is recognized as the most accurate and up-to-date information available for that particular county.  However, please note that the research is limited to that particular county only (Mile deep but an inch wide).  Some cities, such as Philadelphia, PA, encompass more than one county (in the case of Philadelphia, the number is four).  As a best practice, CriminalRecordCheck.com (CRC) recommends searching all counties that encompass a metro area.  Order a Countywide Criminal Record Check Now!

Q

What is a Statewide Felony and Misdemeanor search?

A

A Statewide Felony and Misdemeanor search is conducted through the particular state's central records repository, such as the Bureau of Investigations, State Police, or consolidated court database.  For a complete description, please visit the specific state page.

Statewide searches vary greatly from state to state.  Statewide searches provide a good overview of the entire state.  However, since central records repositories rely on counties for information, many are susceptible to delayed reporting and/or incomplete/inaccurate records. (Mile wide but an inch deep)  Order a Statewide Criminal Record Check Now!

Q

Is a Social Security Number Trace important?

A

Absolutely.  The SSN Trace is vital to any pre-employment screening program.  This search will reveal an applicant's address history and aliases.  It is a great supplemental search that will allow the hiring manager to make an informed decision on which state or states to request criminal record checks in.  This search will confirm the applicant's information and empower the hiring manager to conduct a comprehensive criminal history.  No screening program is complete without the SSN Trace.  Corporate Account Required.  Click here to apply for your Corporate Account!

Q Is it necessary to conduct a Federal criminal record check in addition to a Statewide and/or Countywide criminal record check?

A

Yes.  Federal crimes are either crimes made illegal by U.S. federal legislation or crimes that occur on U.S. federal property.  Federal crimes include kidnapping, drug trafficking, counterfeiting, mail fraud, etc.  Since federal crimes are prosecuted by the U.S. government, charge and conviction information will not be located in the statewide central records repositories or county courts. Q

What should I do if my applicant has a hyphenated name? Or maiden names and aliases?

A

We recommend searching both the applicant's maiden name and current last name for a thorough and comprehensive criminal record check.  In the case of hyphenated names, it is considered a best practice to search both names as well.  It is vital that all maiden and hyphenated names are searched since a majority of county courts and statewide repositories offer name based searches only.
